What is the Inner Teacher?
Teacher Within is a core concept in Awakening Meditation by the teacher Tạ Minh Tuấn (Saga). This is the part of consciousness that knows and witnesses all activities of body and mind without being completely swept along.
Simply put: when you know that you are thinking, sad, angry, or worried, there is a part of you witnessing those states. That knowing part is the doorway to meeting the Inner Teacher.
Not an external figure
The Inner Teacher is not necessarily “someone” outside you or a mystical image. It is the fundamental capacity of awakened awareness: always available, nonjudgmental, needing no embellishment, and often knowing what is right before the reasoning mind becomes overly involved.
The qualities of the Inner Teacher
- Always available: is not something to buy, achieve, or borrow.
- Nonjudgment: simply witness what is happening.
- Not controlled by roles: need not become anyone to have value.
- Natural wisdom: when the mind is quiet enough, answers usually become clearer.
Why Does This Concept Matter?
Many people seek advice outside themselves but overlook their capacity to listen within. Awakening Meditation does not dismiss teachers, books, courses, or communities. But external guidance becomes truly valuable only when it helps learners reconnect with their own inner wisdom.
A short practice
- Sit quietly for 3 minutes.
- Notice your natural breath.
- Name your current state: anxious, tense, sad, tired, empty.
- Ask softly: who is aware of this state?
- Stay with the part that knows, without needing a verbal answer.
