What does observing the breath during meditation mean?
Observe the breath during meditation is the practice of attending to natural breathing. Practitioners need not control breathing or follow a special rhythm, only notice inhalation and exhalation.
In Awakening Meditation by the teacher Tạ Minh Tuấn (Saga), the breath is the nearest doorway back to the body and the present. Recognizing the breath gives beginners a concrete anchor so they are not completely swept up in thoughts.
Where should you direct your attention?
You can choose one of three points:
- Nose: feel breath through both nostrils, cool entering and warm leaving.
- Chest: feel the chest rise and fall.
- Abdomen: feel the abdomen rise and fall with the breath.
Choose the point that is easiest to feel. There is no need to switch constantly. Simplicity helps the mind settle more easily.
How to practice in 7 minutes
- Sit comfortably and keep your back naturally straight.
- Gently close your eyes or look down at a point in front of you.
- Bring attention to one point of the breath: the nose, chest, or belly.
- Silently note “in” as the breath enters and “out” as it leaves.
- When a thought arises, recognize it and return to the breath.
- Finish with a deep breath and feel your whole body.
Should I control my breathing?
Beginners often try to breathe very deeply or evenly. This may help the body settle during the first breaths, but observational meditation centers on knowing the breath as it is.
If the breath is short, know it is short. If it is long, know it is long. If breathing feels uncomfortable, know that discomfort. That knowing is the practice itself.
When the mind strays
A wandering mind is normal. Whenever you notice it following plans, memories, anxiety, or imagination, gently return to the breath. No punishment or excessive analysis needed. Simply return.
